Diazotrophic Trichodesmium impact on UV-Vis radiance and pigment composition in the western tropical South Pacific ArchiMer
Dupouy, Cecile; Frouin, Robert; Tedetti, Marc; Maillard, Morgane; Rodier, Martine; Lombard, Fabien; Guidi, Lionel; Picheral, Marc; Neveux, Jacques; Duhamel, Solange; Charriere, Bruno; Sempere, Richard.
We assessed the influence of the marine diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium on the bio-optical properties of western tropical South Pacific (WTSP) waters (18-22 degrees S, 160 degrees E-160 degrees W) during the February-March 2015 OUTPACE cruise. We performed measurements of backscattering and absorption coefficients, irradiance, and radiance in the euphotic zone with a Satlantic MicroPro free-fall profiler and took Underwater Vision Profiler 5 (UPV5) pictures for counting the largest Trichodesmium spp. colonies. Pigment concentrations were determined by fluorimetry and high-performance liquid chromatography and picoplankton abundance by flow cytometry. Trichome concentration was estimated from pigment algorithms and validated by surface visual...

Distribution of phthalates in Marseille Bay (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Paluselli, Andrea; Fauvelle, Vincent; Schmidt, Natascha; Galgani, Francois; Net, Sopheak; Sempere, Richard.
Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) are a group of emerging organic contaminants that have become a serious issue because of their ubiquitous presence and hazardous impact on the marine environment worldwide. Seawater samples were collected monthly from December 2013 to November 2014 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Marseille Bay). The samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as well as the molecular distribution of dissolved PAEs by using solid phase extraction followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. The results demonstrated the occurrence of six PAEs, including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), benzylbutyl phthalate (BzBP) and...

The Green Edge initiative was developed to investigate the processes controlling the primary productivity and the fate of organic matter produced during the Arctic phytoplankton spring bloom (PSB) and to determine its role in the ecosystem. Two field campaigns were conducted in 2015 and 2016 at an ice camp located on landfast sea ice southeast of Qikiqtarjuaq Island in Baffin Bay (67.4797N, 63.7895W). During both expeditions, a large suite of physical, chemical and biological variables was measured beneath a consolidated sea ice cover from the surface to the bottom at 360 m depth to better understand the factors driving the PSB. Key variables such as temperature, salinity, radiance, irradiance, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a concentration,...

The impact of fish and oysters on components of the pelagic microbial food web (MFW) was studied in a 10 d mesocosm experiment using Mediterranean coastal waters. Two mesocosms contained natural water only ('Controls'), 2 contained natural water with Crassostrea gigas ('Oyster'), and 2 contained natural water with Atherina spp. ('Fish'). Abundances and biomasses of microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates, and ciliates) were measured to estimate their contribution to the total microbial carbon biomass. Two MFW indices, the microbial autotroph: heterotroph C biomass ratio (A:H) structural index and the gross primary production: respiration ratio (GPP:R) functional index, were defined. In the Fish mesocosms, selective...

Occurrence of microplastics in surface waters of the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Schmidt, Natascha; Thibault, Delphine; Galgani, Francois; Paluselli, Andrea; Sempere, Richard.
Between 2014 and 2016 a total of 43 microplastic samples were collected at six sampling stations in the eastern section of the Gulf of Lion (located in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea), as well as upstream of the Rhône River. Microplastics were found in every sample with highly variable concentrations and masses. Concentrations ranged from 6 · 103 items km−2 to 1 · 106 items km−2 (with an average of 112 · 103 items km−2), and mass ranged from 0.30 g km−2 to 1018 g km−2 DW (mean 61.92 ± 178.03 g km−2). The samples with the highest and lowest microplastic count originate both from the Bay of Marseille. For the Bay of Marseille, it is estimated that the total microplastic load consist of 519 · 103 –101 · 106 items weighing 0.07–118 kg. Estimations for...

Occurrence of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea and the Rhone River ArchiMer
Paluselli, Andrea; Aminot, Yann; Galgani, Francois; Net, Sopheak; Sempere, Richard.
Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) which are mainly anthropogenic molecules with endocrine disrupting effects in animals and humans, have been detected in terrestrial and aquatic environments. However, little is known about their distribution in the Mediterranean Sea, mainly because of analytical difficulties and the high possibility of ambient sample contamination. Here, we report the optimization of an existing protocol for the determination of PAEs in seawater and freshwater samples, as well as the first estimation of the source and distribution of phthalates acid esters (PAEs) in coastal waters from the NW Mediterranean Sea. By passing 1 L of sample through glass cartridges packed with 200 mg of Oasis HLB and eluted with 6 mL of ethyl acetate, the recoveries...

One-Single Extraction Procedure for the Simultaneous Determination of a Wide Range of Polar and Nonpolar Organic Contaminants in Seawater ArchiMer
Fauvelle, Vincent; Castro-jimenez, Javier; Schmidt, Natascha; Carlez, Benoit; Panagiotopoulos, Christos; Sempere, Richard.
A rapid analytical method including one-single solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure followed by gas and liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS and LC-HRMS respectively) was developed for the quantification of 40 organic compounds (1.6 < log K-ow < 9.5) in seawater including both legacy and emerging contaminants, with a focus on the most common plastic organic additives. This new method allowed for the analyses of nine organophosphate esters (OPEs), seven phthalates (PAEs), six bisphenols (BPs), five perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and thirteen legacy organochlorinated compounds (OCs, including polychlorobiphenyles and pesticides) with recoveries in the ranges of 57-124% for OPEs, 52-163% for PAEs,...

Organic carbon dynamics in the Mediterranean Sea: An integrated study ArchiMer
Santinelli, Chiara; Sempere, Richard; Van Wambeke, France; Charriere, Bruno; Seritti, Alfredo.
Total (TOC) and dissolved (DOC) organic carbon vertical profiles were analyzed from 11 stations located in various regions of the Mediterranean Sea, together with the distribution of other physical, chemical and biological parameters. TOC showed the highest concentrations (68-83 mu M) above the pycnocline, followed by a marked decrease to values of 45-48 mu M at 100-200 m. Below 200 m, values of 40-45 mu M were observed. The excess TOC and DOC occurring at each station was calculated by subtracting 48 mu M from the observed concentrations. The stock of the excess TOC and DOC increased eastward; while surface DOC mineralization rates decreased from 1.5 mu M d(-1) to 0.26 mu M d(-1) eastward. The integrated average of the biological parameters in the...

Phthalate release from plastic fragments and degradation in seawater ArchiMer
Paluselli, Andrea; Fauvelle, Vincent; Galgani, Francois; Sempere, Richard.
Plastic debris in the environment contain plasticizers, such as phthalates (PAEs), that can be released during plastic aging. Here, two common plastic materials, i.e., an insulation layer of electric cables (polyvinylchloride, PVC-cables) and plastic garbage bag (polyethylene, PE-bags), were incubated in natural seawater under laboratory conditions, and the PAE migration to the seawater phase was studied with varying light and bacterial conditions over a 90-day time course. Free PAEs diluted in seawater were also studied for bacterial degradation. Our results showed that, within the first month of incubation, both plastic materials significantly leached out PAEs in surrounding water. We found that di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) and di-n-butyl phthalate...

Sugar dynamics in large particles during in vitro incubation experiments ArchiMer
Panagiotopoulos, Christos; Sempere, Richard.
Large particles (> 60 mu m) were collected using in situ pumps deployed at 30 and 200 m depth at 2 typical stations in the southern Indian Ocean (Polar Front Zone [PFZ] and Sub-Antarctic Area [SAr]). The samples were incubated in vitro with their own bacterial assemblages for 7 to 17 days in batches under oxic conditions in the dark. Particulate organic carbon (POC) and sugars were monitored over time. Particulate sugars (PCHO-C) accounted for 5 to 20% of POC in the SAr, while they represented 5 to 8% of POC in the PFZ station at the beginning of the experiments. Molecular level analysis indicated that at the time of collection, ribose was among the most abundant sugars (18 to 30 wt% of PCHO-C) at the PFZ station and was rapidly degraded (k = 0.051 to...
